Dental implants
What is a dental implant?
Dental implants can be considered as a treatment option when one or more teeth are missing.
A natural tooth has two main components: the crown, which is the visible part of the tooth, and the root, which is the part of the tooth embedded in the jawbone, under the gum.
The implant acts as an artificial root. It is often shaped like a screw and is made of titanium. Once screwed into the alveolar bone, the implant can be fitted with an artificial crown, a prosthesis, or a dental bridge, depending on the number of teeth to be replaced.
Treatment steps
- Examination and planning: Assess the condition of the bone and teeth (3D X-ray possible).
- Implant placement: Under local anesthesia or conscious sedation, the implant is inserted into the bone.
- Healing: A period of 3 to 6 months for the implant to integrate with the bone.
- Final restoration: A crown or bridge is attached to the implant.
